The ozone is the layer of gas (O3) that protects us not just humans but the planet itself. The ozone depletion is the only well the main reason that the rate of global warming is so high. The ozone layer is in the stratosphere region of our atmosphere its just one lay above the troposphere which is the area where we live. Ozone is a molecule conaining three oxygen atoms. Which if it was on the surface it would be very bad to breath in. Ozone has a blue color and has a very strong odor. Now the reason why the ozone layer is so important is because it acts like a shield for earth. The layer absorbs a portion of the radiation sent to earth but the most important radiation it absorbs is called UVB. UVB is an ultra violet light which cannot be seen by the naked eye alone. For over the last 50 years a compound called chlorofluorocarbon has been used for refrigerators, solvants, and other small appliences. This type of chlorine along with several other types can stay in the air long for them to be carried by winds into the atmosphere more importantly the stratosphere. Once their the compounds then are able to damage the ozone layer. The stability of the CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons is so great that only exposure to strong UV radiation breaks them down. When that happens, the CFC molecule releases atomic chlorine. One chlorine atom can destroy over 100,000 ozone molecules. When this was discovered several countries banned the use of CFCs. But when new uses for the compound were found the banns were quickly dropped. If this continues and nothing is done to limit the amount of CFCs released the chances of skin cancer will greatly increase all over the world. |

To the left is an image that shows the location of our ozone layer. Below is an image the shows the location of the hole in the ozone or where the ozone is the weakest(Note that the hole is over the Artic).
