Welcome to the solar energy section of the Ecoteens website. We will start off by going over the basis of solar eneregy. For the past few decades we have been using solar energy to power emergancy road signs, parkinglot lights, power for satellites, even all electerical power to you house. The sun has the power to do that and so much more. The suns rays are so powerfull that they can provide up to 1000 watts of energy to ever square meter of the earths surface. And thats with only one two billionth of the suns rays Now on to how we collect energy. Solar panels are covered with round or square Photovoltaic cells. When the sun strikes these cells they absorb a certian portion of the suns rays. The cells are usually made up of an element called silicon. Then the energy gets moved into special batteries that are either lead-acid or nickel-cadium based. Solar panels in current times are priced around 1800 dollars where as before they were 8000 dollars and were not as efficient. But the solar panel will pay for itself over a short time saving you on energy bills. Cars are also being designed to travel on solar energy. Today the average speed of a solar car is around 62 to 100 kmph. And can last for up to 100 miles without a single recharge. |
